You Don't Have to be Great to Get Started...
“You don’t have to be great to get started but you have to get started to be great!”
I recently heard this quote used by motivational speaker, Les Brown, in one of his messages and when I posted a graphic of it on social media, it seemed to have resonated with many people. This didn’t surprise me as one of the hardest things I’ve noticed for us to do is to actually get started. Whether it’s a dream career, a business, education, your passion or any goal. Sometimes the hardest part is to make the first move.
I often wondered why this happens and I’ve come to realize that one of the reasons is the fear of failure. The fear of failure can have us thinking that we’re not good enough to start a project and that we should wait until we’re great at it to get moving. Fear of failure can also stop us from moving forward because we don’t want to make mistakes.
Today I want to encourage you, mistakes and failing are necessary on the path to success. These do not make YOU a failure! In fact, it’s during those times when we have not achieved exactly what we set out to that we learn more about ourselves and about what is working and what isn’t. This is something that we should embrace because it helps to make us more resilient, creative and dynamic individuals.
I read a story about inventor, Thomas Edison. It was said that he made the lightbulb after 1,000 unsuccessful attempts. He was quoted to have said, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times, the lightbulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.” That is such a good way to reframe “failed attempts”.
Imagine if Thomas Edison stopped at attempt 999. We may still be using candles to read today!
So my friends, get started on your project, your career move, your business, your vision. Don’t allow the fear of failure to stop you from moving forward. Embrace it as part of the process and learn and grow from it.
STAY STRONG ON YOUR SUCCESS JOURNEY!
