Having an Attitude of Empathy.
As a counselor and coach one of the first thing I learned was that I must show empathy to my clients. This is important in counseling as it helps the counselor to understand where the client in a non judgmental way.
Empathy is not for professional helpers only. Everyone of us should have an empathic attitude towards others.
A google search of the word empathy states that it is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. It is the experience of understanding another’s condition from their perspective.
Empathy goes beyond just feeling sorry for someone. It requires understanding where someone is or what they are going through. Now you may say, it’s difficult to understand what someone is going through unless you’re in their shoes. However, by making the effort to understand, you will be able to get a picture of the other person’s condition.
Why is this important?
This is important because having empathy for others allows us to help them from a more genuine place. It also enables us to see areas in our own selves where we may need help.
Showing empathy does not always involve physical help even though it can at times. It can also be shown in the form of encouragement, prayers, a hug, a smile or simply listening to their story and letting them know that you understand. It’s that simple.
So today, be intentional in developing an attitude of empathy towards others. It will be a life changing experience for you.
Journaling Point: Think of someone that you can show empathy towards. In what ways can you let them know that you understand and that you care?
Until next blog!
