THE UNEXPECTED CHALLENGE

My life is a representation of unexpected events that all came together to create a beautiful picture. I grew up well taken care of in a pretty stable household in the beautiful Caribbean island of Tobago. My Mom in particular was a very hard working woman who took pride in her job of teaching elementary school children and was intent on providing the best for me. She sent me to music and art classes, after school tutoring, dance lessons (which didn’t last long) and more and more skill building activities. My all-round development was of utmost importance to her and my family.  This helped me feel loved, cared for and secure.

However, this feeling of security was compromised at age 18.  Less than a year after returning home from a long trip with her to see my brother and family in London, my Mom died after a brief illness on December 20, 1993.  Needless to say, Christmas that year was ruined.  I lost the most important figure in my life at an age when I definitely needed her presence. Her loss presented a challenge that I did not know how to overcome.

My life was abruptly changed and I had to make a choice -  would I allow this huge loss in my life to make me powerless and stall my progress? Or would I continue to push forward and live the life my Mom would have desired for me?

I decided to push.  A few years later, I made the choice to pursue a college education.  At age 21, with a few hundred dollars in my wallet and every piece of clothing I owned, I boarded a plane from Trinidad, by myself, destined for Queens, New York!  That was the happiest and most liberating moment of my life!

COUNTING MY BLESSINGS

With God’s guidance and the help of human “angels” along the way, I was able to build my professional career by discovering and developing my own gifts and strengths.

I faced several obstacles and experienced setbacks along the way but the lessons I have learned and skills that I have gained have become a great asset for me in achieving my goals and dreams!  At times, I couldn’t see the big picture of where my life was going but knowing what I was made of helped me stay focused.

I have been blessed to be surrounded by people who have encouraged me and have helped stir up my gifts and strengths - my family, my Pastors, my church ‘family’, my co-workers, friends and even professional acquaintances.

One of those acquaintances is best-selling author, speaker and life coach, Valorie Burton. Being under the tutelage of Valorie and other teachers in the CAPP Institute, which she created, has helped me blossom into the coach that I have been striving to be!  Her training and her books have taught me how to get unstuck and move forward, to develop resilience, and to set goals and make decisions with confidence!

I consider this a blessing that I want to share with you!
