Avoiding Goal Fatigue

We all set goals, some big, some small. Career focused women in particular tend to be avid goal setters. You will often see us with physical planners or using goal setting apps on our phones. Whether it's a goal to achieve something personal, academic or career related, we can spend a lot of time in setting and reaching our goals.

It's great to set and accomplish goals but this can sometimes become overwhelming. It takes concentrated energy and effort to accomplish a goal and this energy can be depleted if we don't spend time replenishing it.

Here are some simple tips that I have used to help me avoid what researchers have called "goal-fatigue".

1. Break big goals into small steps.

2. Don't overthink the idea of finding one perfect route to your goal. Look into different routes to achieving it.

3. Avoid people who do not encourage you to reach your goal.

4. Don't be hard on yourself if you do not accomplish your goal. Go back to the drawing board and see what needs to be changed.

Be strategic about setting and accomplishing your goals. Don't allow it to overwhelm you. Take it one step at a time and allow yourself to rest and recharge.

Journaling Points: What goals are you working towards right now? In what ways do you think goal fatigue is impacting you? What can you modify to avoid yourself from becoming overwhelmed and burned out?

Until next blog!
